In late December, I took a box full of hand-knitted scarves, hats and good wishes and sent them off to the Seaman’s Church Institute of New York and New Jersey. A group of dedicated knitters at St. Margaret’s—parents, faculty and staff—created 24 scarves and two hats to be shared with mariners who must work on Christmas Day. (And we only started our group in November!) Affiliated with the Episcopal Church, this organization has been aiding those who make their living on the sea since the Spanish American War.

There are different ways to get involved with this project. Some of us meet together in the Preschool multipurpose room on Monday mornings, and some knit only at home. Our Knitting Together group is made up of experienced knitters, beginners and those who learned as a child and took it up again in order to participate. We’ve clocked more than 300 volunteer hours knitting so far, and we plan to continue knitting throughout the year, making baby caps for the NICU, lap robes for disabled Veterans who are wheelchair-bound and more scarves. We’d like to interest some new members from other parts of the school to join us in the new year. Lower School, Middle School and Upper School parents: Please come meet us on Monday mornings in the Preschool from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.!
